    Description

    14k yellow gold Aetna Insurance Company Stick Pin w/ a Figure of Atlas. Marked on the back top "14k" and what looks like HK&S (maker). It is 2.5" long, the top is 5/8" tall by almost 1/2" wide. In excellent condition with little wear, nice carved details on the figure of Atlas with the world on his shoulders that says AETNA. The stick pin weighs 3.42 grams.
    Aetna Insurance Company organized an annuity fund to sell life insurance in 1850. In 1853, the Annuity department separated from Aetna Insurance and was incorporated as Aetna Life Insurance Company. The company’s first president was Eliphalet A Bulkeley. The “Aetna” name is retained to take advantage of the good reputation of the original Aetna Company.The name was inspired by an 11,000-foot volcano on the eastern shores of Sicily, Mt. Etna, which was the most active volcano in Europe. In Greek mythology Atlas was condemned by Zeus to hold up the heavens through eternity after Atlas lead the Titans in their war against the Olympians.  In some accounts Hercules later took pity on Atlas and built two pillars to ease his burden. Atlas was the Greek god of endurance.
