OFFICIAL WORLD SPEED RECORD (230.269 MPH) CONFIRMED BY A.M.A.
AUGUST 24, BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS IN UTAH: BILL JOHNSON 38, a truck driver
by trade, stepped out of a slow truck on to a highly streamlined TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE
and roared off to a NEW OFFICIAL WORLD SPEED RECORD FOR MOTORCYCLES OF
230.269 MPH! This new world speed record was supervised and sanctioned by the
AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION, COLUMBUS, OHIO, in A.M.A. Class SA (stream-
lined using alcohol base fuel). This same TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE established a
new A.M.A. Class SC (streamlined using pump gasoline) speed record of 205.785 mph
for the measured mile and was timed at 361.41 kilometers for the measured kilo-
meter. (Timed by United States Auto Club, representatives of the Federation Internationale
Motocycliste.) During 10 days of speed testing, this TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE made
over 21 runs over a 9-mile course at speeds of over 200 mph! The engine used to set the
new world record was a standard production 650 cc TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE. Absolutely
no modifications or alterations of any kind were made to the crankshaft, crankcase or
rods. The only special racing-type parts fitted were 12 to 1 compression pistons; racing
valve springs and inlet valve, valve collars and cams . . . and every one of these parts
is available for general sale from any TRIUMPH dealer in the U. S. . . . parts that will
fit YOUR standard production TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE. No, you probably wouldn’t want
to ride a motorcycle at 230 — or even 130 ... but this new record shattering perform-
ance proves once again . . . and beyond any doubt, the SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE AND
UNEQUALLED RELIABILITY OF TRIUMPH MOTORCYCLES. TRIUMPH PROVES WHAT
OTHERS LIKE TO CLAIM! When you own a TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE, you know
that you own the very best (and best looking) and fastest motorcycle in the world!
