The tiger occupies a special place in Japanese culture and art.
This cat evoked feelings of respect, fear, and awe, and the image of the tiger quickly became a symbol of courage.
As you know, there are no tigers in Japan, communication with the outside world was closed, and until the beginning of the XX century
the Japanese have never seen tigers.
Due to the lack of tigers, some Japanese artists chose to copy Chinese paintings. Other artists bought a tiger skin and painted from it. The problem with tiger skins was as follows.
Japanese artists have seen tiger skins, but they have not seen live animals. On the skin, the skin around the eye sockets are shrinking, so the eyes of the tigers came out large, and the ears usually became small, the nose flat, and the paws huge.
The general character of the animal always depends on the imagination of the artist.
The latter is very important, the Japanese fantasy on the theme of huge cats gave the images of tigers an absolutely stunning charm, which, in our opinion, Korean and Chinese picturesque tigers are largely deprived of.
They turned out absolutely wonderful creatures, only vaguely resembling real tigers, but with an abyss of charm. And the variety of Japanese painting schools contributed to the diversity of Japanese tigers, they are all very different, and at the same time, they are necessarily spectacular and charming.
