Light's Golden Jubilee, a celebration of the 50th anniversary (1879 to 1929) of Thomas Edison's incandescent light bulb was held on October 21, 1929, only days before the stock market crash of 1929 that started the Great Depression. The Jubilee also served as the dedication of
    Henry Ford's Greenfield Village
    .
The General Electric Company absorbed Thomas Edison's original business and organized the jubilee to capitalize on connections to Edison. Edison's family thought that General Electric was exploiting Edison and asked Henry Ford, Edison's long-time friend, to intervene. The Jubilee became a collaboration between Henry Ford and General Electric, and Ford took control and hosted the ceremony, which he relocated from its planned location in Schenectady, New York, General Electric's headquarters, to Dearborn, Michigan, the site of Ford's Greenfield Village, originally known as the Thomas Edison Institute.
The souvenir medallion, designed by Julio Kilenyi and made by Whitehead & Hoag Company, commemorates the event and honors Edison and his revolutionary invention
    The connection to
    Henry Ford
makes this item as much an automotive collectible as it is a
    Thomas Edison
    collectible.
