This auction is for a rare, 1897 opera handbill of the Richard Wagner opera
Gotterdammerung
.
The handbill is an advertisement for the opera appearing at the
Neues Deutlches Theater
or New German Theatre in Prague, Czech Republic in 1897.
I found the handbill folded in thirds inside a custom hard-bound musical score book.
The book was damaged beyond repair but it had many inclusions including this handbill.
This piece would look great properly framed and will be carefully shipped to you flat and unfolded.
Condition is rough, with the handbill showing its age.
It has two folds, with the edges tattered, chipped and in some spots torn.
Edges and folds are also discolored with age. The top of the handbill is lightly discolored and wavy from some exposure to moisture.
There is also a small burn in the lower, right-hand side.
Despite all of that, the handbill visually presents well as a vintage specimen.
Early Handbills
of Wagner operas
are difficult to find so even in this condition, the
piece
appears to be quite rare.
