Robert Oppenheimer (April 22, 1904- February 18, 1967) was an American theoretical physicist and the wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory. He is credited with being the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project that developed the first nuclear weapons.

The speech was given by J.R. Oppenheimer, a few months after the Japanese surrender, to an association of Los Alamos scientists. In the speech he says, "What has happened to us, it is really rather major, it is so major that I think in some ways one returns to the greatest developments of the twentieth century." The printed speech was issued to Oppenheimer's personal assistant, Inez Claire O'Brien, for the purpose of organizing and cataloging the research on the Manhattan Project for future
scientists.
The speech was given on November 2, 1945, contains four pages, measures 9.25 by 6.25 inches, in overall good condition, acquired directly from O'Brien's estate, and accompanied with photocopies of O'Brien's Manhattan Project service certificate, U.S. Army discharge papers, and correspondence from Oppenheimer to O'Brien.
